Il protagonista tiene un diario delle vicende nel quale annota la sua disperata fuga attraverso un continente europeo, ormai distrutto e saccheggiato, verso la lontana Gran Bretagna, che essendo un'isola appare come una terra promessa, libera dal flagello zombi.
Ma quando arriverà nell'isola scoprirà quanto accaduto alla Nona Legione di Roma e sopratutto scoprirà la terribile verità sugli zombi, sul vero perché della loro esistenza, e sull'evoluzione dell'essere umano. Verità e conoscenze che descriverà con dovizia di particolari nel suo diario per lasciarle ai posteri, se ce ne saranno.
