I only remember two teachers from High School: a teacher of literature, who taught me in the last two years before graduation, and a mathematics teacher. They made a big impression of me, not only for how they taught their subjects, but also for their refined culture and intelligence. The great Carl Gustav Jung also wrote that every man adopts the characteristics of the place and time of year of his birth, just as a vintage wine does. In the same way, South Africans today are certainly a product of South Africa a hundred, three hundred or even a thousand years ago. So it is that the climate, geographic coordinates, the acidity of the soil, the salinity of the seas, the rainfall, the land (or lack thereof), plus thousands upon thousands of variables, have changed the Dutch, German, Zulu, English, Swazi or Pedi from who they were in the past into the South African we see today. I had the pleasure of photographing South Africans for this book: mostly residents of the Western Cape, but also some from Durban and Johannesburg. Turning my lens to the beautiful Sea Point, trendy Bree street, the Civic Center and Woodstock on the outskirts of the city, I realised that although most of my subjects were citizens of Cape Town, a great deal of them were also tourists. Some are from other parts of South Africa and some from other countries. So, in these photos, mixed in with South Africans, are citizens of Europe, the USA, Canada, Brazil and so on. But, this does not change the general target of my photographic research, as I am convinced that when you “dip” any man or woman in the local humus, even for a few days, somehow their magnetic field, and also their behaviour, changes. Not convinced? Do you really think that a Swede behaves the same way in North Korea as he does in Constantia? With this book, I hope to offer a selection of portraits taken from the humanity of South Africa: a kaleidoscope of work situations, moments of leisure and life as a whole. Providing a glimpse of how South Africans live. And although it is not complete, it is, in my view, certainly very interesting. This collection of images that I am presenting, isn’t “a gallery”, but more specifically “my gallery”. It cannot be otherwise, given that, in my opinion, objectivity is an idiotic pursuit. Perhaps you will find that these images reflect an excess of sympathy towards South Africans, but that’s fine, because that sympathy is there and I did not want to hide it. Instead of using too much text, I prefer to let the images do the talking and I sincerely hope you enjoy the experience.
