Mais la vraie passion de Drieu n'est pas la politique : c'est sa propre mort poursuivie avec une fascination lucide dans tous ses écrits et déjà dans État civil, un de ses premiers ouvrages (1921) : "Le sang, ce hiéroglyphe, se dessine partout sous ma peau comme le nom d'un dieu."
Dans cette étonnante autobiographie, il raconte son enfance pendant la "Belle Époque", son adolescence, tous ses tourments déjà et la quête des idées qui mèneront ensuite toute sa vie.
Étonnante biographie, car au lieu d'une narration du passé, des anecdotes, changements et atermoiements de la jeunesse, Drieu fait partager au lecteur tout à la fois, son malaise de naissance au monde, la velléité qui le handicapera durement et dont on peut trouver les conséquences dans son évolution ultérieure, mais aussi une analyse intéressante de la rencontre au monde et des influences que l'enfant peut subir sa vie durant.

C’est qu’entre les deux, il y a eu la "Grande Guerre" si meurtrière : la véritable boucherie industrielle.
Drieu en sort, blessé deux fois, avec le besoin impérieux d’évacuer l’enfance, d’effectuer un bilan de cette société qui le conduira au suicide, et de sa place dans le monde.
Étonnante biographie - appelée roman mais se révèle une confession, une étude, une recherche d’identité : qui est ce grand garçon blond aux yeux bleus, élevé à Paris et l’été à la campagne, mal aimé par un père absent, nul en affaires et qui préfère sa vieille maitresse, et une mère qui sort tous les soirs. Chagrin à la Proust du départ maternel, angoisses, peur du noir, soupçons.
Pierre est un être mal aimé marqué à vie : à 6 ans il appuie un couteau sur sa poitrine jusqu’au sang. Il torture une poule, presque involontairement, jusqu’à la faire mourir, passant devant le "tribunal familial" qui lui jette le cadavre à la tête.
Déchéance familiale, décadence collective, Pierre Drieu La Rochelle se sent "petit-fils d’une défaite", celle de Sedan sous Napoléon III, revanche de l’Allemagne sur Iéna, vaincu par Napoléon le grand. Pierre, enfant, était fou de Napoléon que lui comptait sa grand-mère.
Mais, la réalité du jour est bien triste. La France est minée par un siècle de révolutions et de guerres.
A 28 ans, il est écœuré du parlementarisme imbécile, des généraux bureaucrates et de la veulerie bourgeoise. Céline le dira avec verve, Malraux ira chercher en Orient ce supplément d’âme que Paris était incapable de fournir, Gide tentera l’URSS, comme Aragon.
Drieu restera en France, amer et masochiste. Il fréquentera Dada et Breton, il s’essaiera à la littérature.
Ensuite, Drieu tournera mal, suivant Doriot dans le P.P.F et la collaboration…
