初めてインドに興味をそそられた時の記憶は何だったろうか。
もしかするとそれは藤原新也さんの写真だったかもしれない。強烈な生と死のイメージ。旅人はそこへ行くと人生が変わると言った。
実際は人生が変わるなんて劇的な出来事は起きなかったが、僕はこの村に出会った。
ある日、村の少年達はクリケットをして遊んでいた。
その姿を見て昔サッカー選手に憧れていた自分を思い出し、一人の少年に何気なくクリケット選手になるのが夢なの？と聞いたのだが、
ビハール州出身だから僕は選手にはなれないよと彼は答えた。
僕はこの答えを聞いた時、自分が日本にいるのではない事を痛感した。
それから僕は彼らが時折見せる"ある表情"を撮るようになり、それについて考え、カーストや貧困問題についても以前より調べるようになった。
その中でアンベードカルや佐々井上人の業績を知り、彼らの希望を知った。
いずれ彼らの口からビハール州出身だから、という言葉が出てこなくなる日を願って僕はまた彼らに会いに行く。

I wonder what it was that first intrigued me so much about India.
Perhaps it was Shinya Fujiwara’s photos, intense images of life and death taken in the vast country.
He once said that any traveler going there would have their life changed.
I did not experience it as a dramatic, life-changing event, but I did encounter something when I visited a village there one day.
Watching a group of boys playing cricket, I was reminded of my boyhood dream of becoming a soccer star.
I casually asked one if he hoped to one day become a star cricket player. “I can’t – I am from Bihar,” was his reply.
Hearing this, I became keenly aware that I was no longer in Japan.
After that time, I began taking photos of a “certain expression” that they would sometimes give.
I thought about this, and started to delve deeper into the issues of caste and poverty.
In doing so, I came to learn about the achievements of figures like B. R. Ambedkar and Surai Sasai and understand their hopes.
I look forward to the day when the words “because I am from Bihar” do not have to be uttered by those boys I came across,
and will continue to visit them into the future.
