After the genocide of Rwanda, in 1994, all the supposed killers crossed the border and entered in Zaire (DRCongo at the time of the dictator MOBUTU) with guns, ammunitions and heavy artillery. The government was not able to control those genociders who continued to loot and torture Congolese families. And started this phenomena of rape of women that had never existed before. Many Congolese organized themselves in armed groups called Mai-Mai in order to protect their villages. We Had Mai-Mai Kifuafua, Mudundu 40, Alleluia, Alunda, Kapopo, Kirikicho, Rahiya Mutomboki, Lafontaine, Mwamba aliaki, APlCS, Cheka… All these armed groups had as initial aims to protect their locals, but many of them became the butchers of their own families simply because their responsibles started to look for money instead of protecting theirs. They start to loot, to used locals into the holes of minerals such as Coltan, cassiterite, gold, diamond, tourmalines and even started to rape their own sisters and mothers the same way the genociders from Rwanda were doing. In 1996, The Rwandese army came into Congo officially with some Congolese allies to chase the dictator Mobutu from the power and try to neutralize the genociders who were continuing to disturb peace in Rwanda crossing the uncontrolled borders that separate Congo from Rwanda. Among the Congolese who came with the Rwandese army was Laurent kabila, the father of Joseph Kabila who is now the controversial president of Congo. After the coalition had chased the dictator Mobutu and started to control the country, Laurent Kabila who became the president, got in troubles with his Rwandese allies to whom he asked to leave Congo. Then started a big war fueled by the international community. Instead of going back to Rwanda, the rwandese army created an armed political Party called RCD that started to fight the Congolese government from the eastside of the country (Goma and Bukavu). Because of the riches of Congo (Gold, diamond, tourmaline, Coltan,Cassiterite, Cobalt, Uranium…) Twelve countries came to fight in Congo on both sides. RCD backed by Rwanda got help from Uganda, Burundi, Somalia, Kenya and Eritrea while the government of Kabila was supported by Angola, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Libya…in total more than 12 countries were fighting in Congo. All these people were killing, looting Congo and raping Congolese women. At the end, The United Nations called all the belligerants to a discussion in South Africa in order to get a solution of peace. It is there that the formula 1+4, meaning one president and 4 vice-presidents was adopted only because all the armed groups wanted to be represented in the government of transition that had to rule the country for two years before the elections could take place. So, from 1996 to 2003, there was no strong government to protect women from rapes. Unfortunately, this crime against women continues until now.
I wrote this drama which is simply the reality of facts when I met Flory in Walungu, half mad, waiting for his wife to come from the forest where she was taken to by Rastas (A branch of killers from Rwanda) the day of their wedding. I promised him to tell his story to all the world. I think that I kept my promise by writing this drama, and then later, by taking Mrs. Lisa JACKSON from the USA to Walungu and into the bush in order to realize THE GREATEST SILENCE: RAPE IN THE CONGO and By helping Sir Itai ANGHEL form Israel realizing a documentary on Rape and Soldier Kids in South Kivu.
