Winter in Akita.
Over the land, snow-filled clouds hang low, creating a decidedly dim atmosphere.
Falling snow turns the scene monochrome.
In this season, the red spectacle that I discovered one day therefore came as quite a surprise.
It was seven years ago now.
Spotting a large flock of seabirds, dancing in the sky in the distance, I headed towards the point below where they circled.
Beyond the breakwater of a small beach, the shoreline was filled with red objects stretching out before me.
These turned out to be thousands of sailfin sandfish egg masses – the locals call them buriko.
In December each year, these fish lay their eggs among the seaweed that drifts off the coast;
some of these balls of roe are swept onto the shore in rough seas, only to be pulled back to the ocean by the waves again.
The people of Akita look forward to this time of year; the sailfin sandfish and its roe a traditional winter feast.
But to me, I saw the arrival of this natural red wonder as something beyond my imagination, a sight that is etched deeply into my mind.
A sparkling memory to treasure of my time in Akita.

冬の秋田。
特に私がいた内陸部は厚い雪雲が垂れ込めて日中でも薄暗い。
雪が降れば限りなくモノクロの世界になる。
そのような季節に出会ったこの赤い光景は驚きだった。
初めて見たのは７年前。
遠くの空に海鳥たちが群れとなって舞っているのが目に入った。
その群れを追いかけて辿り着いたのは小さな浜辺。
防波堤の向こうに赤い何かで埋め尽くされた世界が広がっていた。
赤い何かはハタハタの卵（ぶりこ）だった。
毎年１２月の産卵の時期になると沿岸に漂う藻に大量に産み付けられる。
その一部が荒波に攫われて毎年同じ浜辺に流れ着くのだ。
そして再び波に引き戻されて海に還っていく。
ハタハタとぶりこは秋田の人々がその到来を心待ちしている冬のご馳走である。
けれども私には想像を超えた自然によって生まれた赤い光景として心に刻まれた。
最も鮮やかな思い出として。
